Begin with the End in Mind Learning how to set goals and problem solve can help us feel good about ourselves and others. When we set goals and problem solve, we are learning to build healthy relationships and to deal with conflict better at school, home, and in our community. Remember, healthy friendships make happy kids! https://www.google.ca/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjFxbKZp6vQAhUU5GMKHSPuBHMQjRwIBw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fchsprojectpower.wordpress.com%2F&psig=AFQjCNH0hSYAwy8wF5fY9_j9KQ5hK_9OMA&ust=1479317837918237 At IREC we know that we love playing at recess and sometimes we a very passionate about our play. Sometimes we have a hard time controlling our feelings. Sometimes we get mad. It’s ok to be mad or upset about a situation but your end in mind should always be to solve the problem NOT react by hitting or hurting. Visualize your end in mind by calming your feelings and using your words. Don’t forget to about knowing what Zone you are in! The problem will get solved a lot quicker so that you can continue to play.
The students in 2V have been learning about Habit 1 and how we can apply this personally and as a digitial citizen.
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Additional links and resources for parents: The Digital Trail - Common Sense Media(1-2) Students learn that the information they put online leaves a digital footprint or “trail.” This trail can be big or small, helpful or hurtful, depending on how they manage it. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/videos/follow-the-digital-trail Screen out the Mean (Grades 1-2) - Common Sense Media Students learn that children sometimes can act like bullies when they are online. They explore what cyberbullying means and what they can do when they encounter it. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/lesson/screen-out-mean-2-3 https://jamesdobsonhsa.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/slide4.jpg Everyone can win when you spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself. When we spend time with people who show us kindness and respect we want to help and support each other. We create a culture of caring where everyone wins! Remember, healthy friendships make happy kids! Today we watched a video, created by IREC's 3F class and generated some discussion around the difference between "conflict" and "bullying." You can watch the video below. Welcome to Be Proactive Week! This week we are celebrating how we can use our 7Habits skills to solve problems with conflict & bullying, and to promote healthy relationships!! Across Canada it is Bully Awareness Week. We like to call it Be Proactive Week at IREC because we know that we can solve conflict and bullying problems using our 7 Habits skills to make happy, healthy friendships! Happy & healthy friendships puts an end to bullying & makes solving problems easy!! http://sttimshh.global2.vic.edu.au/files/2015/04/Habit-1-Be-Proactive-qbtava.jpg Be Proactive: Did you know that being Proactive starts with YOU? YOU are in charge of your own body and feelings. YOU choose how you react to others. Being Proactive means we treat people the way we want to be treated. When someone is bothering you, use your words and get adult help if needed. Remember, healthy friendships make happy kids! IREC's 3J class created a video to generate discussion around Bully Awareness. Image address: http://www.steppingstones.lancs.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/zones-of-regulation.png
Our class has been having a lot of discussion around the Zones of Regulation and how they can impact our learning. Understanding the zones also supports our knowledge and understanding for other people's feelings and actions. Today we were practicing sentence writing and one of our students decided to reflect on the zones in her sentence this morning. It is a great representation of what we have been discussing in class. We have been working on building our stamina to do "read to self." Our current goal is to read for 20 minutes without giving up or quitting. We are already at 17 minutes!! As we were discussing our goal of becoming better readers, we realized that we were practicing Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind.
Today we read the book, "Dex, The Heart of a Hero." This book inspired us to recognize that sometimes our goals may seem challenging to reach, but if we have a plan and push ourselves to always do our best, we can achieve anything. At Iron Ridge Elementary Campus our students use technology as a tool to aid them with their learning. Technology is essential to facilitate creative problem solving, information fluency, critical thinking skills and collaboration that we see in today's world. While we want our students to be active contributors in our connected world, we also want them to be safe and responsible.
Digital Citizenship is all about instilling responsibility and developing skills for online learning. As teachers and parents, we need to help our children develop a deep awareness of the online connected world, and how to safely work and learn in this exciting new environment. Today we discussed how "Being Proactive" while online can assist us in making good choices and being responsible for the choices that we make. We watched a video about online safety to generate ideas for discussion. You can watch the video by clicking on the image below. |
